Brave new love that has such papers in it

Our paper Brave New Love: The Threat of High-Tech “Conversion” Therapy and the Bio-Oppression of Sexual Minorities is now officially published, open access.

(Brian D. Earp , Anders Sandberg & Julian Savulescu (2014) Brave New Love: The Threat of High-Tech “Conversion” Therapy and the Bio-Oppression of Sexual Minorities, AJOB Neuroscience, 5:1, 4-12, DOI: 10.1080/21507740.2013.863242)

Basically, we consider the more worrying uses of the love enhancement technologies we have discussed in earlier papers. Why is it that progressive academics like us are pretty gung ho about the ethics of their use, but get creeped out when encountering actual examples of conservative groups trying to use them for social control? And is conversion therapy (assuming it actually worked) automatically a bad idea? In the end the problem shows the tricky gulf between academic ethics and moral principles and the practical world of how societies actually work.
