But do we necessarily want a place for this divergent research to go? I mean, at some point, scientific research has to be deemed too dangerous for the public good. At that point, we might wish we hadn't provided safe haven for them.

When did knowledge hurt anybody? What and how it is applied is a whole different story, but we should never ever stem the development of knowledge.
