An asocial, eccentric person who would probably have been diagnosed as having serious Asperger’s syndrome. He lived for building matchstick sculptures that he never showed to anybody. One day he erupted in an exceedingly showy way: he could project dramatic illusions and make everybody (himself included) believe in them. Overnight he became a media darling, invited everywhere in Italy. The Italians were delighted to have their own nova. Pratelli went along with it, unable to formulate any plans of his own – he always did what others told him, and couldn’t do much else. Of course, there was that very smart voice in the back of his head sometimes giving him instructions, but most of the time he accepted being talk show guest, research subject or nova representative. The fact that he was utterly hopeless as all of the above was no problem. Somehow he managed to get married, divorced, married again and maybe divorced – he was not quite certain how things like that happened, but they did and he was certain it was not an illusion. Later developments: Pratelli was the quintessential loser nova. During the Johannesburg Incident he spent three days with Matt Doyle at the airport while the city was burning. When novas were compelled to go to the North Pole he ended up in his own north-pole hallucinations. And so on, until the fateful day when he contacted Gerhart’s brain too deeply and got a hefty dose of Die Vampire’s inflated ego and dark visions. In reaction, being a somewhat believing catholic, Pratelli got the idea to ask God for help – Gerhart had obviously gone over to the side of the Devil. To everybody’s surprise Pratelli had a secondary eruption, becoming the Archangel Michael. He set out to rid the world of evil, tried to get the Vatican to acknowledge him and was eventually committed to a monastery where friendly but sceptical theologicians kept him busy by questioning him and giving him all the matchsticks he would ever need. |
